FORD BRONCO: A WILD HISTORY

While the 2021 Bronco makes for one thrilling adventure partner, this isn't its first rodeo. In 1966, this new breed of off-road vehicle stampeded onto the scene and into wild hearts everywhere, setting the mold for the modern SUV.

Generation 1:
The Original Ford "All-Purpose Vehicle"
1966-1977

Designed to Go Wherever

Bronco challenged the competition right out of the gate. The first generation offered advanced capability, stability and maneuverability, while its rugged good looks singled it out from the herd.

Born to Win

Shortly after leaving the starting line, Bronco started grabbing the gold in off-road competitions. From its first appearance until today, Bronco has garnered more than its share of off-road racing wins and saddled up driving luminaries like Bill Stroppe, Parnelli Jones, Rod Hall, James Garner and many others.

The Inside Story: Packages

Bronco needs packages worthy of it go-anywhere design and capability. Below we highlight some of the packages that were crafted with the outdoor enthusiast in mind-without skimping on style and comfort.

Generation 2:
Bronco Goes Bigger
1978-1979

Bronco Grows Up

Following its successful debut, Bronco sales reached record levels after the launch of the 2nd generation Bronco in 1978. The first two years of the larger and more luxurious Bronco were some of the most popular 30-year production run. Bronco shifted to a larger platform and body-style sharing components with the F-Series truck while maintaining key off-road capabilities including maneuverability, and approach, departure, and breakover angles.

Rugged Adventurer

Second Generation Bronco upped its toughness game with off-road-ready features including optional dual shocks for the front suspension, heavy-duty rear shocks and front and rear sway bars to improve ride and handling. The front and rear axles, along with other key components, were carried over from the F-Series, and horsepower was amplified with two standard V8 engines.

Bronco-worthy style, Inside and Out

Interior amenities and standout package options leveled up life on the trail.

Generation 3:
Comfort Upgrade
1980-1986

From the Trail to the Interstate

In its third iteration, Bronco set out to blaze further fresh territory. This time, key innovations boosted fuel economy and ensured a smoother ride, both on-road and off. A change from solid front axle to independent front suspension (Twin-Traction Beam) was implemented to improve ride characteristics while not compromising ground clearance in rough terrain. New models also offered more luxury amenities, without sacrificing on the capability front.

Without Compromise

The third generation of Bronco was lighter, more fuel efficient, and had more interior options than ever, yet Bronco never strayed from its unbridled passion for the wild.

The Inside Story: Trim Packages

The third generation offered a wide variety of trim choices and packages.

Generation 4:
The Aerodynamic Age
1987-1991

Information on this page was sourced from "Ford Bronco: A History of Ford's Legendary 4x4"

Streamlining Confidence

For Generation 4, the previous years' trend toward aerodynamic design forged ahead, with sculpted edges (both inside and out) replacing boxy corners. On the engineering side, new powertrain and safety updates took center stage.

The New Shape of Adventure

Affectionately known in enthusiast circles as the "brick nose," the 1987 Bronco boasted a more aerodynamic silhouette than its "bull nose" predecessors. Right angles and jutting edges gave way to dynamic sloping lines for the body, bumpers and mirrors, and headlights were flush with the front end. A revamped interior featured rounded surfaces in the dashboard, instrument cluster and climate controls.

The Inside Story: Special Editions

The 1991 model year saw the introduction of two new trim packages for Bronco owners, each catering to unique demographics in the decade. It was the 25th anniversary of Bronco which Ford celebrated with offering a limited-production model called the Silver Anniversary Edition. On the opposite side of the spectrum was the Nite Edition Bronco.

Generation 5:
The "Original Body Style"
1992-1996

Looks that Thrill

In addition to its several key safety innovations, the fifth (and final, for years to come) generation of Bronco was famously easy on the eyes. This latecomer to the fold featured a more aerodynamic design, plus a host of other stylish updates, both inside and out.

Riding Out in Style

Dubbed the "Original Body Style (OBS)" by Bronco insiders, Generation 5 boasted cleaner lines—particularly on the front end—than earlier series. Designers further enhanced the aerodynamics, which included streamlined exterior mirrors. Accentuating its fresh profile, Bronco came with an exciting, new collection of paint colors and combinations—rumored to be some of the most stunning of its 30-year run.

Bronco in Uniform

By Generation 5, Bronco's reputation for capability, durability and off-road prowess was well-established. In fact, Bronco was often the vehicle of choice for rangers in the United States Forest Service and Border Patrol officers.

The Inside Story: The Final Lap

The last years of Bronco production produced revised aerodynamics and styling.
