Brief History of Festus

Festus is located in Jefferson County.

The first settler in the area was Charley Conners, who built a log cabin in 1803.

Festus was settled shortly after the establishment of New Detroit (later Crystal City), which was a dry company town. Initially established around 1879 by W. J. Adams as Limitville, it was nicknamed "Tanglefoot" because several of its first businesses were saloons. As incorporation was discussed, a more dignified name was sought. Town legend claims the name was chosen by a church ceremony where a Bible was opened blindly and the first proper name encountered was that of Porcius Festus, the governor of Judea around 60 AD (Acts 24:27). There is another town legend that says there was a disagreement over what to name the city and it was agreed upon that a Bible would be shot and whatever proper name closest to the last page penetrated would be chosen. The City of Festus was incorporated in 1887 as a 4th class city.

The current government structure consisting of a mayor, a city council and a city administrator, was adopted in 2061 The City Council is the legislative branch and meetings of the Council are presided over by the Mayor. The City Administrator is responsible for implementing the policies of the Council as well as overseeing day-to-day operations of the city.

History
In the late 1970s, a planning committee petitioned the YMCA of Greater St. Louis to establish a YMCA in Jefferson County. Youth programs were first held at out-reach sites under the direction of the South County Family YMCA. Then in 1984, Senator Jack Gannon donated four acres of land in Festus on which to build a YMCA. Construction of a 32,000 square-foot facility, built in part through in-kind contributions, was completed in February 1992.

Welcome to the Festus R-VI Public School District. Our district serves approximately 3,100 students, grades K-12 and was founded in 1948. The district is located in Jefferson County, and includes the cities of Festus (pop. 10,000), Hematite (200), and Mapaville (300), as well as portions of other communities. Geographically, the district covers 30 square miles in east central Missouri, just west of the Mississippi River approximately 33 miles south of St. Louis on Interstate 55. The student population is 80% suburban and 20% rural. The largest employers in the district include the Jefferson Regional Hospital, Wal-Mart Supercenter and the School District. Attendance centers include a grade K-3 Elementary School, 4-6 Intermediate Building, 7-8 Middle School and a 9-12 High School. The district has purchased property to construct a new 9-12 high school building west of the city of Festus on Highway A.

Our high school is designated an A+ school by the state, allowing students who meet requirements to attend select MO post-secondary schools tuition free. The Elementary School was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 1999 and a Gold Star School in 1999, as was the Middle School in 2000, and the High School in 2001. In 2002, the district became the first school district in the State of Missouri to be awarded Level 4 Transition Accreditation by the North Central Association. The district received the highest rating from the Center for Academic Progress in 2010 study comparing achievement against expenditures. MSBA identified the district as a “Top 18” achieving school in 2010. The High School is currently meeting standards under the High Schools That Work program.
